IEEE SA recently participated in the session “Bridging the Digital Divide: AI Pathways for Inclusive Development in the Global South” at the Second World Summit for Social Development (WSSD2), held in Doha from 4–6 November 2025.

Co-organized by the World Digital Technology Academy (WDTA), the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD), and the Republic of The Gambia, the session explored how artificial intelligence can reduce inequalities by expanding access to opportunities, essential services, and participation in the digital economy in developing countries.

Moderated by Ilcheong Yi of UNRISD, the session opened with remarks from H.E. Amb. Prof. Muhammadou M. O. Kah, Ambassador of The Gambia to the United Nations in Geneva, and Wook-Jin Chang of the United Nations NGO Branch. Followed by a keynote by Yale Li, Executive Chairman of WDTA.

Following this, a panel discussion on “Digital Equity for the Global South: Harnessing AI for Inclusive Development” featured Clara Neppel, Senior Director, European Business Operations, IEEE; Cynthia Samuel-Olonjuwon of the International Labour Organization; Craig T. Gibson of DupeWise AI Labs; Jin Huang of iFLYTEK; and Romain Malandre of the World Digital Technology Academy.

“It is essential that developing countries have a meaningful role in shaping how AI evolves — from co-developing standards to ensuring fair access to data and technology,” said Clara Neppel, Senior Director, IEEE Europe.

The session concluded with remarks by Melan Xu of the WDTA and Ilcheong Yi of UNRISD. In addition, UNRISD and WDTA signed a partnership agreement to host the Digital World Conference in Geneva in 2026.
