AI, Data and Governance

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly becoming a driving force reshaping critical domains such as healthcare, energy, mobility, and public services. Ensuring that AI and its applications are governed responsibly is essential. This requires effective governance frameworks which put in place the right guardrails for human-centric and responsible innovation enabling growth and flourishing.

AI, Data and Governance

IEEE is actively contributing to the global debate on AI governance by advancing human-centred approaches, ethical design methodologies, and internationally aligned standards developed through its cross-disciplinary global community. Its ground-breaking Ethically Aligned Design (EAD) Framework, which started its development in 2016 has led to the development of a series of global standards and certifications, starting with the IEEE 7000 series of standards, the cornerstone in the “ethics by design” approachand the CertifAIEd™ program, certifying AI products, services and platforms against a set of criteria for adhering to ethical principles (transparency, accountability, algorithmic bias and privacy).

The focus is on creating mechanisms that not only promote transparency, explainability, and accountability but also reflect shared values across diverse regions. Through research, multi-stakeholder engagement, and policy dialogue, IEEE supports the development of governance models that help policy makers, industry, and civil society navigate the challenges and opportunities of AI. IEEE Europe is collecting testimonials on different use cases for the impact of IEEE SA standards. Reach out to us to feature in our series.

This work also connects to broader EU and global initiatives that aim to ensure AI contributes to sustainable development and public trust. From establishing ethical principles to supporting regulatory frameworks such as the EU AI Act, IEEE provides platforms where technologists and policymakers can collaborate on building responsible governance models. The goal is to foster innovation while creating a trusted, responsible and reliable human-aligned foundation for AI adoption worldwide.

IEEE Europe regularly conducts webinars. The most recent webinar series was on “AI and Sustainability” and was co-organized with the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence’s (GPAI) RAISE project and supported by Centre d’expertise international de Montréal en Intelligence artificielle (CEIMIA). The webinars examined on one side how AI contributes to climate goals, along with the environmental impact of AI and the ways to reduce it, to maximize the net impact of AI

The series featured four events with participation from academics, sustainable AI specialists, policymakers, and industry leaders. Together, they contributed to advancing understanding of AI’s role in relation to its environmental footprint.
